Oshogatsu in Liittle Tokyo
To promote business in Little Tokyo and spread Japanese cultural traditions, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Southern California
started the annual “Oshogatsu in Little Tokyo” 14 years ago. On stage, performances such as the “Shishimai”
by the Taiko Project, entertained the crowd for 4.5 hours. The event was filled with excitement. Also, the Nisei Week Queen passed out sake. With other activities such as rice cake pounding and kite making, it was a day filled with Japanese New Year's activities. At the Koyasan, many people are lined up to visit the buddhist temple. The waiting time was up to 30 minutes. Each individual seemed to be very enthusiastic. Many people visited the Koyasan on the first two days of the new year and enjoyed a traditional Japanese New Year.
Rose Parade 2012
On January 2nd, the annual Rose Parade took place. This year’s pace car for the parade was the “Honda Fit EV”, the 100% electric car. Honda's float is approaching! This year's theme is “Sweet Dreams”. As Kenny G played the saxophone, the float captured the essence of a child’s dream. There was a big crescent moon, a castle made of candies, a train and an airplane. This year’s Grand Marshal, who is the face of the parade, was Iraq war veteran and winner of “Dancing with the Stars”, J.R. Martinez. Also, the Kyoto Tachibana High School Green Band was invited to represent Asia. Besides Japan, many countries joined, such as Indonesia, Sweden, Canada and China. Making this an international event. It’s not just for the fun of it! The parade alone brings in $181 million! With the Rose bowl game, held on the same day, the total economic effect is expected to be nearly $240 million. This year’s parade marked the 123rd year. The 5.5 mile course included 44 floats and 21 bands. Around 700,000 people gathered to celebrate the coming of 2012.
Special Screening of Director Kaneto Shindo’s Films
At the “Cinefamily” movie theater in West Hollywood, a special showing of Kaneto Shindo’s films was held. The producer, who is also the director’s son, Jiro Shindo, made a speech on stage. Hollywood actor Benicio Del Toro made this screening, possible.
He is a fan of director Shindo and 6 films were shown throughout 4 days. Also, his latest film “Postcard” was in heaters for general screening for the first time in the US. This film was chosen to represent Japan in the Director Kaneto Shindo is 99 years old. He is the oldest filmmaker in Japan. The nominees for the 2012 Academy Awards will be announced on January 24th.
