Torrance Beach Cleanup
Over 760 local area students and other volunteers gathered on Torrance beach on September 17th. They spent the day cleaning up styrofoam scraps, cigarette butts and other things that had washed up on the beach.
“Coastal Cleanup Day” was started in 1985 by the non-profit “Heal the Bay” organization.
American Honda, which is headquartered in Torrance, also participated and this marks the twelveth year that they have participated in cleanu activities.
This year, across the United States, some 63,000 volunteers participated in the cleanup which had collected more than 600 pounds of trash.
JBA Softball Tournament
On October 9th, the Japanese Business Assocation held its JBA Softball Tournament at Huntington Beach.
This tournament saw the JBA team face off against the Japan-US Council Nikkei Dream Team, but the game was suddenly stopped due to rain and was switched to a Home Run Derby.
This competition, continued from last year, aims to deepen exchanges with the LA Nikkei population and the JBA.
This year, the Nikkei Dream Team had a stunning win over the JBA Team by a score of 34 to 18!

Japan Airline’s New Menu
On September 13th, Japan Airlines unveiled its “New Meals” to the LA media at LAX.
Executive class meals have been changed since September 1st.
The creation of “Shunmi Sai Sai”, a dish that consists of 9 small bowl meals, has been supervised by a 5th generation Master Chef from a Kyoto style restaurant that has been around since 1864.
This meal has been a part of the Japan Airlines menu since September 1st on all flights between Narita and LAX.
Tamie Lobster Report
UTB’s Tamie Akimoto reports from the Lobster Festival in San Pedro. With so many kinds of lobster meals that it made it into the Guinness Book of World Records, the Lobster Festival has been running for 13 years and proved to be a real hit with everyone!
