Thanksgiving Day
The Fred Jordan Mission held its 67th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner this year on 5th street. As much as 3100 lbs. of turkey was prepared for Thanksgiving and was distributed by over 1000 volunteers to those in attendance.
In a Rancho park in West LA a Thanksgiving Pot Luck Party was being held. But there were no turkeys to be seen at this party as it was a vegan Thanksgiving picnic. This was a thanksgiving party for everything, including the animals whose lives were spared.
Matsutoyo Kai - 45th Anniversary Concert
On November 14th, the Matsutoyo Kai held its 45th Anniversary folk music festival at the James Armstrong Theater. Around 50 members performed 41 songs on stage in front of an auditorium of 500 people. Among them, the group of popular young performers known as “Minyo Station”, which was started 2 years ago with the goal of spreading Japanese folk music to the younger generation and communities outside of Japan.
Asahi Gakuen Speech Contest
Asahi Gakuen held its annual speech contest in Santa Monica on November 13th. Thirty-one advanced level students from the school each gave about a 7 minute speech in Japanese. This year, the winning speech was “Me, who was born in America”, by 11th grade, Sasaki Hiyou.
