After the accidental death of his elder brother at sea, Koji leaves his job as a cram school instructor in Tokyo and returns to his hometown to help his father with the family kelp-harvesting business. Unable to please his demanding, old-fashioned father, Koji faces a crisis of confidence and becomes uncertain about his future. Meanwhile, Koji's elder sister returns home after becoming pregnant while in an illicit love affair. Under these trying circumstances, tensions between family members grow. As the annual summer festival approaches, the father, after too many drinks, angrily confronts his children about the paths they have chosen in life. This emotional showdown allows each family member to communicate suppressed feelings, and finally, after a long separation, the family is reunited.
